Volkswagen to recall nearly 99,000 electric vehicles in US over door handle issues

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday that Volkswagen will recall 98,806 electric SUVs to fix their door handles because they do not provide enough protection against water ingress.

NHTSA said the recall, which includes ID.4 EVs from the 2021-2024 model years, may have been built with door handles that do not meet factory specifications for intrusion protection.

Water seeping into the printed circuit board in the doors can cause malfunctions that cause the locks to open, NHTSA added.

Volkswagen dealers will inspect and replace door handles as necessary and update vehicle software free of charge, the auto safety regulator said.
