Arne Slot to Liverpool: Feyenoord boss announces he will take over from Jurgen Klopp this summer | Football news

Feyenoord’s Arne Slot has announced that he will replace Jurgen Klopp as head coach at Liverpool this summer.

“I can confirm that I will be coaching Liverpool next season,” Slot said at Friday’s press conference.

Slot secured the Dutch Cup in April and led Feyenoord to their first title in six years last season.

Slot had previously been approached by Tottenham, Chelsea and Leeds. He signed a new contract last May to keep him at Feyenoord until 2026, but has expressed his desire to take the next step in his career.

Who is Slot and why do Liverpool want him?

  • Age: 45
  • Trophies won: Eredivisie 2022/23, KNVB Cup 2023/24
  • Playstyle: Aggressive, with maximum acceleration
  • Favorite formations: 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3

Similarities between Slot’s Feyenoord and Klopp’s Liverpool

  • Feyenoord have won possession in the final third more than any team in Europe’s top five leagues, with Liverpool second.
  • Average distance to own goal when winning possession in open play: Feyenoord 45.2m, Liverpool 44.6m
  • High turnovers: Liverpool 353, Feyenoord 344
  • Average possession in the league: Feyenoord 62%, Liverpool 61.4%

Slot is set to replace Klopp – who takes charge of his final Liverpool game against Wolves on Sunday, live on Sky Sports – after the German spent the last nine years at Anfield.

During his time at Liverpool, Klopp won the Champions League in 2019, the Premier League in 2020, as well as the 2022 FA Cup and two Carabao Cup trophies in 2022 and 2024. He also won the Club World Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 2019.

Klopp announced his departure from Liverpool in January this year, citing a lack of energy to continue leading the club at the highest level.

Carragher: Liverpool move for Slot shows lack of top managers

Jamie Carragher believes Arne Slot could find a move from Feyenoord to Liverpool difficult as he would have to meet the club’s current demands of competing for the biggest trophies every season.

Jamie Carragher says Liverpool’s move for Arne Slot demonstrates the lack of “top handles” currently available.

Talking to Sky Sportsformer Liverpool defender Carragher said: “From Feyenoord to Liverpool is a huge jump and I think it shows at the moment that there is probably a lack of real top managers out there when you look at who Liverpool are turning to.

“Initially it was Xabi Alonso – it’s only his first full season as a coach – then there was talk of Sporting’s Ruben Amorim, who is only 39.”

Carragher added that the scenario Slot faces at Anfield is different to the one Klopp inherited in 2014 after being in charge of Borussia Dortmund, or the one Rafa Benitez stepped into in 2004 after leaving Valencia.

“I don’t think Benitez or Klopp would have come,” he said. “Benitez came on the back of two LaLiga titles and a UEFA Cup, or Klopp won a couple of league titles and reached a Champions League final. Liverpool were in a different space then.

“That Liverpool team, certainly under Benitez that I was part of, we were the team trying to qualify for the top four. Same with Klopp when he came on.

“But Liverpool are in a different era now. They really want to challenge for the Premier League every season. Next season, in the Champions League, they would expect to reach at least the quarter-finals.

“I think it’s a huge jump, but he’s obviously a great coach with a great record so far. We’ll see.”

“Slot brings crazy and sexy football”

Feyenoord boss Arne Slot gives an inspirational team talk after a huge win against Ajax last season – his side went on to win the Eredivisie

Slot took over from Dick Advocaat at Feyenoord for the start of the 2021/22 season, with the club finishing fifth in the previous campaign.

Just two years later, they were champions of the Eredivisie. He built a pressing team, playing intense, attack-minded football, and managing to win.

Talking to Sky SportsDutch football journalist Marcel van der Kraan stated: “It was only a matter of time before another big English club came knocking on the door.

“He was not only a successful manager, he was also very impressive with his style of play, very careful football, in the style of Pep Guardiola.

“He was a successful manager and made Feyenoord champions by playing crazy and sexy football. It’s sexy what this man brings to a football field.

“There is nothing left for him to gain here. The next step for him is to join a big league club and no league is bigger for the Dutchman than the Premier League.
