What Trump and Harris were saying when the microphones were off

  • Harris and Trump argued over whether to turn off their microphones before Tuesday’s debate.
  • A reporter in the room captured the moments when both candidates spoke in turn.
  • The pool reporter noted that more off-mic moments came from Harris than Trump.

The muted microphones were a massive point of contention ahead of Tuesday’s debate.

The ABC News host chose to silence the candidates when it wasn’t their turn to speak, even though Kamala Harris, unlike Joe Biden, wanted live microphones throughout the event — presumably assuming that any outburst from Donald Trump it would work in her favor.

But there were a number of off-mic comments Tuesday night, captured by a pool reporter who was allowed to attend the debate in person without an audience.

The group noted that more off-mic comments and reactions came from Harris than Trump — the former president at one point even appearing to turn Harris’ infamous “I’m talking” line against her.

Here’s what both Harris and Trump had to say when the microphones were turned off:

  • 9.10pm: In response to Harris saying he doesn’t have an economic plan for the American people, Trump said: “It’s just a bite. They gave him that to say.”
  • 9.14pm: After Trump said the US was barely making electronic chips anymore, Harris said: “That’s not true. It’s not true.”
  • 9:16 p.m.: When Trump said Democrats support abortion in the ninth month, Harris said “Come on,” “no,” and “that’s not true,” according to the group.
  • 9:25 p.m.: “You didn’t. Come on,” Harris whispered after Trump said he was a leader in IVF.
  • 9:28 p.m.: Harris “threw her head back in laughter,” according to the pool, after Trump said people weren’t attending her rallies.
  • 9.29pm: Harris was incredulous about Trump’s claims that immigrants eat cats and dogs. “What? This is unbelievable,” she said.
  • 9.34pm: Harris also said it was “not true” after Trump said crime was down around the world but up in the US.
  • 9:35 p.m.: Trump “blundered” when Harris addressed his criminal charges and convictions, according to the group.
  • 9:39 p.m.: “She’s the one who gunned it,” Trump said, claiming the prosecutions against him were politically motivated.
  • 9:42 p.m.: Harris said “that’s not true” after Trump both accused her of being against fracking and defunding the police. After he told her he was talking, she said, “Don’t lie.”
  • 9:59 p.m.: “Come on,” Harris said after Trump accused her of hating Israel.
  • 10:12 p.m.: “Excuse me, I have to answer that,” Trump said, after Harris joked that Putin would eat him for lunch.
  • 10:27 p.m.: “He has a plan to destroy our country,” Trump said — to which Harris responded, “That’s not true.”
  • 10:29 p.m.: Harris laughed when Trump said he had a “concept” of a health care plan.
  • 10:34 p.m.: After Trump said the U.S. is eliminating manufacturing jobs, Harris said, “That’s not true.”
  • During their closing remarks, Trump jeered and Harris “repeatedly shook his head,” according to the group.
