Mississippi commissioner warns of Francine’s impact on state

Mississippi’s insurance commissioner is reminding policyholders that once Hurricane Francine passes through Louisiana, it will likely bring strong winds and heavy rain to the western part of the Magnolia State.

And residents should be prepared by reading their insurance policies, knowing what is and isn’t covered, Commissioner Mike Chaney said, according to local news reports. Homeowners and businesses should also keep their policy in a waterproof place, make a digital copy of it, and create an inventory of the structure’s contents with estimated item values.

Flood damage isn’t covered by most homeowner’s policies, and it’s probably too late to secure a National Flood Insurance Program policy, he noted.

The National Weather Service said Francine was expected to make landfall on the Louisiana coast southwest of New Orleans Wednesday evening as a Category 1 or 2 hurricane. By Thursday morning, the storm’s center should be near Jackson, Mississippi.
