Two workers die in an accident at a farm silo in South Dakota

VOLGA, SD (AP) — Two people have died in an accident at a farm silo in South Dakota.

The Brookings County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that the crash happened just before noon Saturday at a farm near Volga in eastern South Dakota.

The sheriff’s office said Larry Dalzell, 51, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Randi Vandekieft, 41, of Warner Robins, Ga., were working to repair a damaged roof over a silo that had 24, 4 meters (80 feet) high.

Dalzell and Vandekieft were trapped in the silo “and are believed to have been overcome by toxic gases,” the sheriff’s office said. Rescuers pulled them out, but both were pronounced dead.

It was not clear how the workers got into the silo, which was almost full.
