Elon Musk explains the 80/20 prediction for AI

The rapid progress of artificial intelligence could lead to one of two futures, according to Elon Musk.

Earlier this week, the Tesla CEO appeared on the “All In” podcast where he talked about the future of humanoid robots and AI tools that “can do everything we can do, but better.” As AI improves every day, Musk said it is more likely to have a positive effect on the world – but there is still a 20% risk of “human annihilation”.

“The good future of artificial intelligence is one of immense prosperity where there is an age of abundance, there is no shortage of goods and services, and everyone can have everything they want,” Musk said.

He added that there’s about an 80 percent chance that that future will materialize as the tech industry tries to integrate AI into our everyday lives.

Tesla is working on its own humanoid robot called Optimus, which is still in development. Musk said he believes these “general purpose” robots will one day be able to groom, groom or walk your dog for you, and will cost around $20,000.

In a world where lots of robots can do the jobs people don’t want, “there’s no real limit to the size of the economy,” he said.

However, Musk predicted that self-driving cars and helpful robots have a 20 percent chance of causing a “crisis of meaning” because they perform simple tasks faster and better than humans.

Although he joked about the annihilation of humanity, Musk said that AI’s biggest challenge is that humans no longer know what to do with themselves.

Whether they decide to conquer the world or help people, Musk predicted that robots will “far outnumber humans” in 30 years. He said it would likely take five or six years for the Optimus robots to reach a million production units per year — though he also said he’s been known to be overly optimistic about timelines.

Meanwhile, Musk said he knows more and more people who seem to be enjoying their lives after retirement and leaving the workforce.

But don’t expect Musk, who is 53, to stop working anytime soon.

He is now directly involved in at least 6 companies, his most recent being xAI, an AI startup that competes with OpenAI.

And if Trump is returned to office, the Tesla CEO said he would be willing to serve as an adviser on a government efficiency commission, a government cost-saving effort the former president recently outlined after Musk pitched him the idea .
