Melinda French Gates has made a “substantial” donation to Kamala Harris

When French Gates was still part of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which she founded with her ex-husband Bill Gates, she generally avoided getting involved in partisan causes. She gave money to both Republicans and Democrats, but determined that a second term with former President Donald Trump “would be dangerous” especially for reproductive rights.

In fact, French-Gates, who focuses largely on women’s and reproductive rights, referenced abortion when he endorsed Harris in a post about X. In May, she pledged to spend 1 billion of dollars by 2026 for groups working for women, families and reproductive rights.

French-Gates, who is worth nearly $11 billion, did not say how much he donated to the Harris-Walz campaign. But her support extends beyond a direct financial contribution — French-Gates said she’s also offered to host events.

The vice president and French Gates have met several times, even sitting together at a state dinner. French Gates described them as “close to many problems”.

As mega donors continue to pour money into elections, much has been made of Silicon Valley’s perceived shift to the right. French Gates, however, isn’t so sure that the Bay Area is actually going red.

“I’m not sure that’s fair,” she said when asked about the shift to the right, adding that the Valley is “actually pretty split Democrat and Republican.”
