The EU’s top privacy regulator opens a probe into Google’s AI compliance

The EU’s privacy regulator on Thursday opened an investigation into whether search engine giant Google adequately protected the personal data of European Union users before using it to help develop its core AI model.

Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC), the main EU regulator for most top US internet firms due to the location of their EU operations in Ireland, said the probe concerned Pathways Language Model 2 (PaLM 2) of unit of Alphabet Inc.

“This legal inquiry is part of the wider efforts of the DPC, which works in collaboration with peer regulatory authorities in the EU/EEA (European Economic Area), in regulating the processing of personal data of EU/EEA data subjects in the development of models of IA. and systems,” DPC said in a statement.

Social media platform X agreed last week not to train its AI systems using personal data collected from users in the European Union before they had the option to withdraw their consent following legal action by the Irish regulator.
