Horse Power: Inspiral can win the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury

INSPIRAL can win the Al Shaqab Lockinge Stakes ((British Champions Series) (3.35pm) at Newbury on Saturday afternoon).

John and Thady Gosden’s highly talented five-year-old daughter of Frankel can make a winning return to action in the Group 1 feature at the Berkshire track.

Inspiral at his best is a formidable miler and has already won six times at top level at two, three and four. He can now bring home a magnificent seventh Group 1 in his fourth campaign at the track. She won the Bet365 Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket in October 2021, then, despite missing out on Classic glory, took the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2022 and the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deauville later that summer. And last season, despite defeat at Ascot, when second to Triple Time in the Queen Anne Stakes and the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, when she finished last of five behind Paddington, she finished the season with three more Group . A second win in the Jacques Le Marois was followed by another in the Sun Chariot Stakes and when she stepped up to 1m2f for the first time at Santa Anita she beat Warm Heart by a neck in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf in November last year.

She has shown she can be the star turn against her own sex and against the boys, and also after winning on first starts in two of her previous three campaigns – that Queen Anne beat the only blemish – Inspiral should be ready to triumph again. With Frankie Dettori ‘retired’ from riding in Britain, Inspiral will have a new partner for the first time since her winning debut under Robert Havlin at Newmarket in June 2021 with Kieran Shoemark in the saddle. But that won’t make much of a difference to her hopes of victory, especially as she receives a 3lb allowance for fillies and mares from all her rivals. She can get the better of the recent Group 2 winner at Sandown, who is looking for Roger Varian’s hat-trick. Charyn and the French raider Great Stone – who he beat at Deauville last August – to claim another Group 1 success.

of Willie Haggas THE DESERT HERO can return to winning ways in the Group Three Sky Sports Aston Park Stakes (1.50pm). The four-year-old – owned by King Charles III and Queen Camilla – gave the monarch a first win at Royal Ascot since his coronation in the King George V Stakes and followed up at Glorious Goodwood in the Group Three Gordon Stakes. The winning son of Sea The Stars could not give Her Majesty a first Classic success when third in the St Leger in September. But after finishing second to Okeechobee in the Group Three bet365 Gordon Richards Stakes on his seasonal return, he can build on that for another Group success en route to a possible return to Royal Ascot next month.

from Clive Cox JAMES’S DELIGHT can make it three wins from four starts this season in the Listed Highclere Castle Gin Carnarvon Stakes (2.25pm). The three-year-old son of Invincible Army was unbeaten again last season after success on his debut at Newbury over six furlongs. But he has been in fine form this season, winning twice over six furlongs at Pontefract and Newmarket last time. He was beaten over seven furlongs at this Berkshire track between those wins. But back to six furlongs and listed company, James’s Delight can claim a third win of the season.

Aidan O’Brien won last season’s Bertinelli Gold Cup at Trade Nation London (Heritage Handicap) (3pm). And Master Ballydoyle could do it again with chantilly. The 1m2f contest was won by some smart performers, several who will win at group level. The 2021 winner Bay Bridge is an excellent example who went on to score Group 2 and Group 1 wins and has performed creditably at the highest level. Chantilly, a three-year-old son of Galileo, could certainly become a smart long-distance performer after running well without winning as a juvenile. He came off the mark with a clear handicap when stepped up over this distance at Leopardstown last month. He can continue his progress with another win here on his way to better things, potentially starting at Royal Ascot next month.

Jack Channon’s FERROUS can get a hat-trick of wins this year in the HKJC World Pool Handicap (16.10). The four-year-old has won twice all-time at Wolverhampton and Kempton and can bring the hat-trick back on the Turf, a surface he also scored at Goodwood this time last year.
