Leicester City are keen on Lazio’s breakthrough star Christos Mandas

Leicester City are among the clubs considering Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas, according to Italian publication Corriere dello Sport (via Calcio Mercato).

Leicester City are returning to the Premier League, but before they launch themselves back into top-flight football, they face an important summer transfer window.

While the main objective of promoted clubs is to build a squad capable of staying in the division, the Foxes are in a bad position with the PSR regulations and, as they await a penalty, must sell players to avoid further reprimands.

However, it appears the club are still eyeing potential additions, with a new link emerging from reports in Italy.

Corriere dello Sport claims that Leicester City are among the admirers of Lazio goalkeeper Christos Mandas. Manager Enzo Maresca reportedly asked for information on the 22-year-old shooter.

Bologna boss Thiago Motta could try to sign him if he goes to Juventus, while Fiorentina could revive their previous interest, it added.

The report goes on to say that Lazio will want no less than €15m (around £12.8m) for Mandas.

Who is this?

THE QUIZ STARTS!

A high price?

Mandas has seen its stock rise impressively in recent months. First signed as a back-up by Lazio, he has impressed since breaking into the starting XI amid goalkeeper injuries.

Six clean sheets and just nine goals conceded in 12 games has made him a fast favorite in Italy, but at €15m, you have to feel he could prove too expensive for Leicester City.

Perhaps early player sales could pave the way for the Foxes to part with fees like these for additions later in the window. At that point, however, Mandas may be snapped up by another club.

At 22, he looks like a bright prospect for the future and, having only signed a long-term deal last summer, Lazio are eyeing a €15m demand for their breakthrough ace.

This valuation begs the question, do Leicester City need Mandas? And undoubtedly the answer is no.

They have Mads Hermansen as a reliable first baseman and one who can hold down the starting spot for years to come. Because of this, spending big on someone to compete with him, especially given the Foxes’ financial situation, could be a mistake.

A new backup may be needed, but Maresca et al can look for much more insightful options than Mandas. The free agent market is often a good one for goaltenders.

Mandas is a good player and an up and coming player no doubt. However, in Leicester City’s situation, it would be a rather strange signing at the reported fee.
