US UoM consumer confidence index rises to 69 in September vs. 68 expected

US consumer confidence improved slightly in early September, with the University of Michigan’s preliminary index of consumer sentiment rising to 69 from 67.9 in August. This reading beat market expectations of 68.

The Current Conditions Index rose to 62.9 from 61.3, and the Consumer Expectations Index improved to 73 from 72.1.

The survey details showed that the one-year inflation estimate fell to 2.7 percent from 2.8 percent, while the five-year inflation outlook rose to 3.1 percent from 3 percent.

Market reaction

These data failed to trigger a noticeable market reaction. At press time, the US dollar index was down 0.3% on the day at 100.94.
