The Met Office has issued a 16-hour rain warning for Devon and Cornwall. This weekend’s amazing weather will come to a halt on Monday when a wall of rain arrives.

The yellow warning is in place from 8am until 11.59pm on Monday and covers most of Devon and Cornwall. The Met Office in Exeter said hheavy rain is likely to bring some transport disruptions and possible flooding in a few places.

Up to 50mm of rain could fall in parts of the region on Monday. The Met Office said: “A band of rain will move eastwards across the area until Monday to bring a spell of heavy and persistent rain.

“Rain will reach Cornwall during the morning but will not reach the eastern parts of the warning area until Monday afternoon. 20-30mm of rain is expected with up to 40-50mm on some hills. Conditions are likely to improve. in Cornwall by the afternoon but will persist in the east of the area until the end of the day.”

What to expect

  • Flooding of some homes and businesses is possible

  • Spraying and flooding on roads likely to increase travel time

  • Bus and train services are likely to be affected, with journey times longer

The warm and sunny weather is set to return from 1pm on Sunday, when parts of north and east Devon will be under a storm warning.

Southwest five-day forecast

Today:

A mostly dry and bright start with heavy showers developing in the east by the afternoon, bringing heavy rain and possible lightning and hail. Sensation of warmth in sunlight. Maximum temperature 23C.

This evening:

Drier tonight with the odd shower, otherwise some late spells of sunshine. Occasional clear spells before the rain arrives in the far southwest at dawn. A gentle night. Minimum temperature 11C.

Months:

Returning uneasily from the west, with heavy and persistent rain sweeping across much of the region by afternoon, accompanied by brisk winds and a cooling sensation. Maximum temperature 18C.

Outlook for Tuesday through Thursday:

Changeable to longer showers on Tuesday, followed by sunny showers and showers on Wednesday and Thursday, heavy at times. Temperatures return closer to average.
