Five-year-old boy who fell 150 meters to his death from 15th floor in east London ‘opened the window by pressing a button’

A five-year-old boy who fell 150 meters to his death from the 15th floor of an east London flat “opened the window by just pressing a button”.

Alam Makial, fell from the 15th floor of Jacobs House on New City Road in Newham, east London, just after 6am yesterday.

Witnesses said his father could be heard screaming “my son is dead” after falling from the high-rise.

The boy’s aunt, Maryam Hadafow, told The Sun that her nephew went into the kitchen and opened the window after waking up early to go to school.

Alam fell from a window that can be opened completely with the push of a button.

Flowers and tributes have been paid at the scene of the tragedy which the Met Police said was not being treated as suspicious.

“Alam’s father screamed for help, shouting ‘My son, my son is dead.’

“His mum has written emails about windows and doors to the council five times and said this is not safe for my children.”

Paying tribute to the five-year-old, Maryam added: “He was a lovely, sweet boy. It was very sweet.

Neighbors have expressed concerns about the windows in the past.

One resident, Luka Tunjic, 65, said the windows terrified him when he had small children and thought they were dangerous.

He said: “I was very afraid of windows when my child was little.

“I’ve always locked them because it can be so dangerous.” I live on the tenth floor.

Locals were shocked by the tragedy and paid their respects to the family by leaving flowers at the scene.

Eyewitness JJ, who lives on the 12th floor, three floors below the flat where the boy fell, told MailOnline: ‘It was horrible. I felt so sorry for them. Nothing could be done.

“I heard the yelling and screaming and I thought it was someone we probably had a lot to drink because that happens a lot down here. ‘

He said a female paramedic was in tears when she realized the boy had died.

Another witness, Uber driver Miah, 57, added: “I’m in shock and disbelief.

Neighbors described witnessing Alam’s father shouting “My son, my son is dead” after he fell 150 meters after opening a window.

– I was across the street from where the boy fell. I thought it was someone who was drunk.

“It happened in front of my house. I could see the ambulance people and the police and they were trying to help him.

Scotland Yard is treating the death as “unexpected” but no arrests have been made.

People who live in the 16-storey 1960s block, where flats can cost up to £200,000, have been left in “total shock” by the young man’s death and want answers about how it happened.

Metropolitan Police detectives say the death is not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said: “We were called at 5.58am on Thursday 16 May to reports of a child who had fallen from a height on New City Road, E13.

“Officers, London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance attended.

“At the scene, a five-year-old boy had fallen from an upper floor of a block of flats.

“Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he unfortunately died at the scene. His family is aware and is being supported.

He later added: “The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner. Our thoughts are with the child’s family at this time.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: “We were called at 5.59am today to reports of a person who had fallen from a height on New City Road, Plaistow.

“We sent resources to the scene including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a rapid response vehicle and an incident response officer. We also sent a trauma team in a car from the London Air Ambulance.

“Our first paramedics were on the scene in about four minutes.

“Very sad, a child was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A spokesman for Newham Council said they were “deeply sorry to hear about this devastating incident, we send our sincere condolences to all those affected”.

They added: “We have staff on site to provide reassurance to residents at this difficult time while we work with partners to establish all the facts.

“The council is continuing to establish the facts of this tragic incident, until we have further information we cannot make any further comment. Our priority is to support the family during this devastating time.
