LAURA VANDERKAM: Well, the first thing I would say to people who are worried about not having enough time in the day is to stop looking at your life in terms of days. We all say, you know, there aren’t enough hours in the day to get to everything I want to get to. And that may be true, but we don’t tend to live our lives in a few days. In fact, we live our lives in weeks. And so often, the key to finding space for the things that matter to you is to stop trying to do it every day and maybe look at the whole week and see where you can fit in. So if you want to exercise, you don’t actually have to exercise seven days a week. Maybe you could find three or four days a week to do it. Or maybe something like family meals is important to you. It probably doesn’t happen at 6pm Monday to Friday.

Someone puts a steak in front of you, Norman Rockwell style or something. But maybe you could find three or four times to eat together during the week. So first look at the whole week, see where you can fit things. But then I think we can also take a look at how we spend our time. One of the first things I always suggest people do when they feel like life is a little tighter than they’d like is to try to track your time. Most of us don’t really know where our classes are taking us. We may have a general idea of our working days. I mean, especially if people have to report their time somewhere. But the time after that can become incredibly vague and amorphous and we don’t know what’s going on and you end up going to bed at some point. But what happened in those hours in between and on the weekends is something else entirely. So try to keep track of your time. And I think you’ll start to see that there are things you want to spend more time on, and there’s also probably things you want to spend less time on, or that you’ve could move to try to make room for the things that matter. you.
