Southampton will face Leeds in the promotion play-off final

Southampton will face Leeds United for a place in next year’s English Premier League after beating West Brom 3-1 in the second leg of the Championship play-offs.

Southampton and Leeds meet at Wembley on May 26 to decide who joins already promoted Leicester City and Ipswich Town in the top flight.

Saints progress 3-1 on aggregate after a goalless game at the Hawthorns last Sunday.

The fixture is fitting considering Leeds finished third and Southampton fourth in the Championship. Leeds eliminated Norwich on Thursday to guarantee their place in the decider.

Watched by British Prime Minister and Saints fan Rishi Sunak, Southampton spent the first half on the attack and the visitors did well to soak up the pressure.

Four minutes into the second half came the breakthrough when Will Smallbone smashed a volley past Alex Palmer.

Prolific forward Adam Armstrong got his reward 12 minutes from time when he curled a low drive through the legs of a defender and into the far corner of the net.

He grabbed Southampton’s second and third from the penalty spot with five minutes remaining to confirm the hosts’ superiority.

Cédric Kipré got a late consolation for West Brom.

“What a win,” Armstrong told Sky Sports. “We know West Brom are a good team in both legs. We had to set a mark for the final and we did that. We know what we’re up against.

“The main thing now is Wembley. We’ll rest and recover, and maybe a few beers in between.”

Both Southampton and Leeds are looking to return straight to the Premier League, a year after the Saints were relegated for the first time since 2005.

Supporters of both teams clashed during a pitch invasion at the end of the match at St Mary’s.

The home fans flooded the pitch in celebration, while trouble broke out when some supporters made their way to the end of the pitch containing away supporters.

Brawls broke out and punches appeared to be thrown.
