Tropical system moves into Carolina Monday with wind, rain, flooding

A potential tropical storm loomed off the coast of the Carolinas Monday morning, with conditions expected to worsen for the Wrightsville Beach and Wilmington areas.

The National Weather Service and local news outlets noted that the unrest has already brought heavy rain to the area and minor flooding is expected. Another five inches of rain is expected from the storm.

Several schools were closed Monday as sustained winds reached 50 mph, the StarNews reported.

The system was moving northwest Monday morning and could gain speed. A tropical storm warning was issued by the National Hurricane Center for coastal areas from Charleston, South Carolina, to Hatteras, North Carolina, the Weather Channel reported.

The storm is expected to move inland toward Charlotte, weakening by Wednesday morning.
