Presidents who have escaped assassination attempts, including Donald Trump

Four out of 45 American presidents have been assassinated throughout American history.

Many other CEOs have escaped assassination attempts thanks to heroic bystanders, diligent guards, misfired guns, and sheer luck.

Most recently, former President Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts in a matter of months. He was wounded during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July after a shooter opened fire from a nearby rooftop. A spokesman said Trump was “fine” following the incident. The FBI said it was investigating the shooting as an attempted murder.

Then, in September, a man with a gun was spotted on Trump’s golf course in Florida, 500 yards from the former president. The suspect fled after a Secret Service agent shot him and was later arrested and charged with two federal firearms offenses. The FBI said it was investigating “what appears to be an attempted murder.”

Two presidents who have been assassinated have escaped previous attempts on their lives.

On a hot August night in 1864, a sniper shot Lincoln’s hat off his head — missing his skull by inches — while he was riding his favorite horse “Old Abe” alone, according to “1864: Lincoln at the Gates of History”. ” Lincoln was later shot and killed by Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, just five days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender.

Nearly a century later, in 1960, retired postal worker Richard Paul Pavlick rigged his car with dynamite and set about crashing the vehicle into President-elect John F. Kennedy’s limousine in Palm Beach, Florida, Smithsonian magazine reported. He was motivated by his intense hatred of Catholics and the Kennedy family, but backed off when he saw that the president was with his wife and young children. Pavlick was later arrested and institutionalized until 1966, three years after Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald while visiting Dallas, Texas.

These 13 other presidents faced serious assassination threats and ultimately survived, and these are just the most dramatic and highly publicized cases. No doubt the Secret Service has foiled many more over the years.
