Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou press conference on fragility, fan clash and transfers

Ange Postecoglou speaks to the media on Friday ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s final Premier League game of the season at Sheffield United on Sunday.

Spurs need just one point to ensure they finish fifth in the Australian’s first campaign in charge and compete in the Europa League next season. The final whistle will also mark the first time Tottenham have had a manager complete a season at the club in half a decade, such has been the high turnover of managers since N17.

Postecoglou was left fuming after Tuesday night’s defeat to Manchester City, which ended Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League, not at his players’ strong display, but at what he said. football.london there were “fragile foundations” at the club and he said the problems were “inside, outside and everywhere” and that he would have to go back to the drawing board on some aspects and tweak others.

The Spurs boss also clashed with a fan behind the dugout at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the meeting and is expected to talk about it, as well as looking ahead to the summer transfer window and giving an update on any fresh injuries after the midweek defeat.

Our Tottenham correspondent Alasdair Gold is among those quizzing Postecoglou ahead of the game against relegated United. Scroll down for his latest updates from the press conference at Hotspur Way.

Postecoglou on the fan he reacted to behind the dugout

I think if you’re going to sit behind the bench, especially in a home game, you have to be respectful because you’re within reach of the most important people. He wasn’t happy that I got a goal so I went back to find out what his problem was and he used language he shouldn’t and was abusive and if I hear that I don’t care who it is I will do what. deal with it

But he is more than welcome to come back next time and take his place and express his views. If he swears, if he is abusive, he will get the same treatment from me again. But at the same time you also feel, “Okay mate, I’ve done it on the opposition’s pitches every week, give me a break on my home pitch”.

Postecoglou on Spurs fans

Supporters are there to support their club and do their part. They certainly did their part for us this year. I mean the number of games we’ve won late in the stadium this year has been amazing. That’s the crowd and whoever was in the team, the fans played a small part of that. Now, like I said, the last game I don’t understand and I’m holding my hands up, I got it wrong. I sat here the day before and scoffed at the whole thing because I really didn’t think it was. But if that’s how people feel and again I can’t because I’m not a Spurs fan. They are and this is their football club. They are the guards, not me. All I can say is give my opinion on what you need to be successful and to me you can’t be successful if your motivations change depending on the competition. You have to win the whole team. If you play with your brother, you must fight to the death. He’s still your brother, but you have to fight to the death to win. That’s just been my whole career. It wasn’t just a Spurs fan thing. Everyone I heard said the same thing and that I understand how they feel. Like they understand how they feel, well I don’t because I’m totally different. I just can’t think of anything worse than not going all-in for the win every time we’re out there, but that’s me.

The Spurs boss said if he had fixed the issues he spoke about last night

No, not in two days. We have some work to do. It’s clear and obvious, and that’s what we need to focus on.

Postecoglou at his false nine setup on Tuesday

There is a misconception about me having a plan. I’ve probably used every formation and system over the years, usually many in one game.

Postecoglou on team news

It’s Gio Lo Celso, he took a bit of a beating when he came in. I didn’t train today. We have to train again tomorrow.

Interesting things from Postecoglou

I just asked Postecoglou about how agitated he was on the touchline on Tuesday night and he admitted it was “probably the worst managerial experience of my life” because he was so worried and anxious people would put them at doubt integrity if City win comfortably.
