Canadian union, GM extend deadline for contract talks, avert strike at Ontario plant By Reuters

(Reuters) – Canadian union Unifor extended its deadline for contract negotiations with General Motors (NYSE: ) on Tuesday, avoiding a strike at the Ingersoll, Ont., plant that makes electric vehicles and batteries.

The deadline for a deal was Tuesday, and Unifor Local 88 previously said 97 percent of its more than 1,300 members are in favor of stopping work at the CAMI plant if a deal isn’t reached.

The union did not give a new deadline and declined to share additional information beyond what it said in its statement.

“Our negotiating committee continues to make progress at the bargaining table and discussions will continue as long as this remains the case,” Unifor National President Lana Payne said in a statement.

GM, which makes BrightDrop commercial trucks and Ultium battery modules at the plant, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Unifor and GM began contract negotiations last week.
