US home construction rose 9.6% in August, building permits up 4.9%

• US housing starts and building permits rose sharply in August.

US housing starts rose 9.6% in August to 1.356 million units, monthly data released by the US Census Bureau showed on Wednesday. This reading followed the 6.8% decline recorded in July.

In the same period, Building Permits rose 4.9% after falling 3.3% in July.

Market reaction

The US Dollar Index showed no reaction to these numbers and was last seen staying in negative territory below 101.00.
