Large willow tree cut down in Leicester park due to ‘potential danger’

An “unstable” tree in a Leicester park was cut down this week, with no stump left.Leicester City Council said the willow tree in Castle Gardens, near Bede’s Island, had become a “potential hazard” to visitors.

The council said the lifting of the roots had caused the willow to “bend over”. Pictures from the park show the empty, shadowless space where the tree once stood.

The city council said it would plant another willow tree in its place later this year. A council spokesman said: “Unfortunately we had to remove a willow tree from Castle Park this week.

“The tree was suffering from a root tilt, which was causing it to lean and become unstable. Our team of tree and forest experts considered it to be a potential hazard to park visitors and so it has been removed.”

Root Heave is defined as the upward movement and fracturing of pavements, surfaced driveways, and other terrain due to radial root growth.
