One of the dirtiest beaches in England is in Cornwall

Porthluney, a beach in Cornwall, has been given the dubious honor of a ‘Brown Flag’ award, marking it as one of the dirtiest beaches in England. This is according to research that has identified 13 of the least clean beaches in the country.

However, it’s not all bad news for Cornwall. The county is the fourth cleanest in England when it comes to swimming in the sea during the summer months.

Dorset, Devon and Suffolk lead the group with the highest percentage of beaches rated ‘excellent’ for clean water, according to data from UK travel website Holiday Park Guru.

The travel site analyzed summer water quality data from the Environment Agency, covering hundreds of beaches across the country. He then singled out the dirtiest 13 by presenting them with ‘Brown Flag Awards’, with Porthluney among the recipients.

These “winning” beaches are given free brown flags emblazoned with a poop emoji for swimmers to see. These beaches have been rated ‘poor’ by the Environment Agency due to the presence of bacteria such as e-coli from sewage and other waste.
