The beach destination with £1.50 pints for a £44 flight from Manchester Airport

Going on holiday abroad is a summer staple for many. It’s a chance to relax, unwind and lose yourself in another country.

Beach destinations are among the most popular when it comes to getting away, and places like Spain, Greece and Italy have long been favorites for a sunny getaway. However, vacations to these popular spots can be expensive, so visitors frequently look for cheaper alternatives to help keep costs down when traveling.

All over Europe there are undiscovered spots that still give you that all-important beach holiday experience, but without the expense of popular locations. Among them is the beach resort of Constanța in Romania.

There are direct flights from Manchester Airport to Bucharest in Romania with Ryanair starting from around £44 one way in June (although note that you may have to pay more for extras such as baggage and seat allocation ). About two hours away from the capital is Constanța, which is on the coast of the Black Sea country.

It is a place rich in history, dating back to 600 BC, making it one of the oldest cities in Europe. Occupied by various groups over the centuries, there are Roman, Bulgarian, Byzantine and Ottoman influences. There is even a stunning art nouveau casino perched overlooking the sea, a photo spot for many visitors.

But what draws visitors to Constanța is Mamaia beach, a vast five-mile stretch of white sand, which is actually quite rare to find in the area. What makes it even better for tourists is how cheap it is: a local draft beer will cost around £1.50, while meals cost around £7 per person.

There are dozens of beach bars and restaurants spread across Mamaia, so there are plenty of options when it comes to food and drink. Nightlife is also excellent if that’s your thing.

Popular with tourists and locals alike, Constanta’s beach season runs from mid-June to September. Summer temperatures average a pleasant 23C, so much nicer than the roasting conditions you can get in Spain and other Mediterranean countries.

There is a wide range of accommodation options in Constanța, so there is something to suit every budget. Booking.com has a seven-night stay in June at the Mirage Medspa Hotel for two adults starting from £466, including breakfast. A seven-night stay for two adults is available at the Ramada by Wyndham Constanta for a week in June from £531 including breakfast.

Meanwhile, Hotels.com lists a seven-night stay at the Continental Forum Constanța for two adults from £581 (excluding breakfast). It also has a seven-night stay at Casa Hrisicos for £983 (excluding breakfast). Lastminute.com has a seven-night stay for two adults at the Central Mamaia Hotel in June for £552, including breakfast.
