Red Flag Signs of Autoimmune Disease You Need to Know

A doctor is warning the public about five red flag signs that could indicate you have an autoimmune disease without realizing it. As Celiac Awareness Week (May 15-21) approaches, people are being reminded of the symptoms and when to visit your GP.

Figures from the charity Celiac UK show that one in 100 people in the UK has celiac disease, but only 36% receive a diagnosis. Selph, a company that offers home health testing kits, has shared five “lesser-known” symptoms of the disease that can lead to a “silent celiac” diagnosis.

Research has also shown that 75% of people in the UK who have celiac disease are unaware of their condition. Studies have also shown that a third of those who suffer from the disease show no symptoms.

What is celiac disease

Dr Alasdair Scott, gut health specialist at Selph, said: “Celiac disease is an autoimmune condition, where something triggers an immune response in your body against itself. In the case of celiac disease, gluten is the trigger. Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.

“Gluten itself is harmless and most of us can eat it without any problems. However, in about one in 100 people, gluten triggers the immune system to attack the lining of the small intestine, causing inflammation.

Celiac disease is usually treated with a gluten-free diet

“Celiac disease can affect you at any age, although the most common age to be diagnosed is between 30 and 50. It affects both sexes, but women are more likely to be diagnosed with celiac disease than men. You are also more likely to have celiac disease if someone else in your family has it.
