Constable Rebecca Joynes slams comments on teachers’ case as ‘incredibly disappointing’

Police have criticized comments made after the conviction of teacher Rebecca Joynes. Statements made on social media since she was found guilty forced her to stop commenting on a social media post about the case.

The 30-year-old woman was convicted on Friday, May 17, of engaging in sexual activity with two boys she met while working at the school in a case that shocked the nation. She groomed a boy for a shopping trip before taking him back to her flat and having sex with him when he was 15.

She had a child with another student, with whom she began a sexual relationship when she was 15. After her conviction, Greater Manchester Police posted her photo on X, formerly known as Twitter, along with details of her offences.

However, they have now stopped replies to the post due to the “incredibly disappointing” comments, MEN reports. A GMP spokesman said the responses would be removed “out of respect for the victims”.

Under the original post about Joynes, a spokesperson has since written: “Some of the comments on this post were incredibly disappointing. A child sexual predator has been convicted of serious crimes and there are two young victims at the center of this case.”

The spokesperson added: “We have removed these comments and stopped any further replies that may be made out of respect for the victims and any survivors of sexual exploitation who may see this.” Joynes was convicted of four counts of sexual activity with a child and two counts of sexual activity with a child by a person in a position of trust.

She will be sentenced at a later date.
