The US military is buying foreign-made weapons, here’s what our sources have told us

Purchasing weapons and weapon designs from other countries is part of how the Department of Defense maintains artillery stores for the United States. Despite the country’s position as a top arms producer, there are still items they prefer to source elsewhere. American-made weapons have a special place in the US military arsenal, but there are some foreign-made weapons that are also used on a daily basis.

To determine which small arms used by the US military are not made by US companies, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed a range of sources including military manuals, government press releases and firearms publications relating to small arms and light weapons. currently used by various US military branches. Data on the weapon’s type, caliber, feed, manufacturer and year it entered service came from the Military Factory, an online database of military vehicles, aircraft, weapons and more. Weapons are listed in alphabetical order.

A notable absence from this list is sniper rifles. Many of these are produced domestically by American companies, and there has been a push in recent decades to make this small arms segment entirely American.

Why this matters

It is worth pointing out that most of these listed weapons originate from Central Europe and range from rifles, rocket launchers, battle rifles and submachine guns. However, under the Buy American Act of 1933, the US government must prefer domestically produced small arms, among others. The legal solution to this is for foreign companies to set up manufacturing plants in the US and manufacture these weapons, then sell them to the US military.

Here’s a look at foreign-made small arms used by the US military.
