Rhyse Martin: Three teams the Leeds Rhinos star could sign for

Leeds Rhinos were the Super League side to confirm 2025 recruitment news the earliest when they announced Ryan Hall would return to Headingley, but they must turn their attention to retaining, particularly star players like Rhyse Martin.

Martin is one of the most reliable players in the Leeds Rhinos squad, with the second row/centre a consistent performer and also vital to the boots, at one point setting a Super League record for most successful conversions in a row.

During his time at Headingley, Martin made over 100 appearances, including 25 or more in each of the last three seasons, as well as playing in all 12 games so far in 2024. During his time with the club, he amassed 912 points with the 1,000 mark looming come the end of this season.

However, if he doesn’t reach 1,000 points in 2024, then will he get a chance next season? The Papua New Guinea international is out of contract and has been subject to transfer rumours, particularly from down under. If he leaves, which team could follow Rhyse Martin?

The dolphins

By far the strongest transfer link is for Rhyse Martin to return and play for the NRL’s newest side, The Dolphins. Talks of a move to the Redcliffe club first gained traction after Loves Rugby League reported that Wayne Bennett’s side were interested in Martin.

Rohan Smith recently spoke about the idea that Rhyse Martin could leave the club, with the Australian head coach providing an update on Martin and center Luis Roberts.

He said: “(Martin and Roberts) are both works in progress at the moment with these discussions. They have been taken by a club player and an agent so we will update as we have an update.”

With no strong belief that Martin will remain a Leeds Rhinos player, perhaps the Dolphins link makes the most sense for the 31-year-old’s next destination.

Leigh Leopards

Leigh would be an incredibly bold move for Martin and so far there have been no suggestions that it is a move that could be in the works. However, following Adrian Lam’s contract extension which was confirmed last night, the Leopards are now able to focus solely on recruiting and building squads with the “noise from outside”, as Lam described it, away from road now his future is secure. .

There are obvious PNG links at Leigh with the likes of Edwin Ipape and father and son duo Adrian and Lachlan Lam being at the club. A quota place will be available for Leigh with the confirmed exit of John Asiata, but the likes of Tom Amone, Ben Nakubuwai and Ricky Leutele are also out of contract.

Amone and Nakubuwai are of course props by trade, but their exits would represent the need for additions to the pack, while Leutele at center could be a similar trade for Rhyse Martin. Besides, if there’s any man in Super League who can shock you, it’s Derek Beaumont and he’ll certainly be bold enough to attempt a move for Martin.

Another year at Leeds Rhinos before a PNG NRL side emerges

Much of the talk of Martin leaving Leeds Rhinos is due to him moving back to be the first name scorer for an NRL team in Papua New Guinea. The only problem so far, a PNG team does not exist in the NRL.

However, that doesn’t mean it won’t exist in the near future, with talk heating up of a PNG team becoming the NRL’s 18th side. If that happens, then Martin has been touted as one of the most desirable players to kick off the draft, with the 31-year-old the most capped player for the Kumuls national team.

Martin has previously revealed that any contract talks are with his manager, but has previously stated what a huge impact an NRL team for the island nation would have on rugby league at home. Speaking to NRL.com last year, Martin explained: “Bringing in a PNG NRL team would be amazing for everyone.

“The country has wanted something like this for a long time and what it does is give more children and people in Papua New Guinea a greater goal to achieve or aspire to.”

While that is potentially settled, don’t be surprised if Martin rolls the dice once more at Headingley before an exit for the 2026 season.
