For nearly a decade, I held positions as a research analyst at various investment firms, mostly in Toronto. I left the city in the summer of 2021 and moved to a yurt that I built in the boreal forest. I went from living in downtown Toronto to living alone in the woods about 100 km from the nearest paved road or grocery store. The longer I stay in the forest, the deeper I understand the fundamental role of energy and commodities. Self-sufficiency does not exist whether it is in nature or in society. On a personal level, I simply replaced my relationships with grocery stores and utility providers with natural ecosystems and ultimately with God. I didn’t become self-sufficient, I just changed who I depend on. Knowing that my basic needs are met even when I’m alone in the woods has allowed me to replace the anxiety I felt in the city with love. Although my relationship with the financial markets has changed over time, my passion is still alive and well. I have a deep understanding of the importance of timing when it comes to going against the crowd, as it has passed me by quite a few times before. I feel more comfortable on the periphery of a crowd while trying to anticipate where the mass is moving next. The rule is that I am generally early or even too early when entering a trade. For example, I got involved in the uranium trade in early 2015 and the cycle lasted much longer than I originally expected. Once the bull run started in 2021 I was out of the trade as my patience ran out. While this is far from my only such mistake, it is a big one. Getting the thesis right is the easy part, getting the timing right is the hardest part. Only when these two variables are combined is big money made and only the masters of their art can do it. My past mistakes indicate that I have a lot to learn before I become one of them. My journey in the financial markets started when I was 14 years old. After nearly a decade in the investment industry and two years alone in the woods, I understand that my journey is spiritual in nature. Because of this, it is self-defeating to compare my returns to other people’s or other indices. My only basis of comparison is my former self and nothing else. My goal is to grow as a person, make mistakes, learn from them and be better next time. If I can learn something from other people’s mistakes, that’s a bonus, but that’s easier said than done. My mistakes are what gave me most of my experience. Writing has always been an important part of my research process. Now that I’m independent, my desire is to make my research available to everyone, instead of a select group of individuals, as it has been for the past decade or so. , to any philosophy, to any religion or to any company. My only affiliation is with God. This page should be seen as the notebook of a personal journey. The only thing I can guarantee is that I will make missteps along the way. If I get something right, tell you I just got lucky. I don’t recommend anything to anyone and if you read what I write too seriously, you might end up alone in the woods, so be careful.
