The chancellor’s bid for economic optimism has been disrupted…

Rachel Reeves said Labor was “not a protest party” as her main conference speech was interrupted by naysayers.

In her first conference speech as chancellor, Reeves received applause and a standing ovation as she began.

But soon after, a protester was kicked out while complaining about the government’s arms sales to Israel.

The chancellor replied: “This is a changed Labor Party, a Labor Party that represents working people, not a protest party.”

Campaign group Climate Resistance claimed responsibility for the protest.

Reeves’ speech, just over a month before his first budget on October 30, was an attempt to strike a more optimistic tone about Britain’s economy after months of somber messages about the legacy he has left or conservatives.

She said: “Because I know how much damage has been done in these 14 years, let me say one thing straight: there will be no going back to austerity. Tory austerity has been a destructive choice for our public services and for investment and growth. .

“Yes, we have to deal with the Tory legacy and that means tough decisions, but I will not let that dampen our ambition for Britain.

“So it will be a budget with real ambition, a budget to fix the foundations, a budget to deliver the change we promised, a budget to rebuild Britain.”

In her speech, she announced that free breakfast clubs across England will start rolling out from April in hundreds of schools.

It was, she said, “an investment in our young people, an investment in reducing child poverty and investment in our economy.”
