Robbie Savage highlights Leeds United’s ‘terrible’ record which Daniel Farke needs to address

Will it be sixth time lucky for Leeds United in the play-offs? The Whites are 90 minutes away from securing a return to the Premier League after overcoming Norwich City in a two-legged semi-final.

Thursday’s 4-0 thrashing of the Canaries at Elland Road sealed United’s first trip to Wembley for 16 years. They will face Southampton at the national stadium on May 26 after Russell Martin’s men beat West Bromwich Albion 3-1 in the second leg of the semi-finals on Friday.

Writing in the weekly Daily Mirror column, pundit Robbie Savage said: “Although I always hold back when I go to Leeds, I want to see them back in the Premier League. They are a real football club with a huge fan base and a proud heritage – and they are 90 minutes away from returning to the big time after demolishing Norwich in the play-off semi-finals.

“But – and there is a big but – Leeds have a terrible record in the play-offs, a 100 per cent record: five attempts to win promotion, five failures. They lost two finals against Watford and Doncaster, plus two semi-finals against Derby (in the Spygate drama) and Millwall, as well as the inaugural two-legged final against Charlton Athletic.

“Daniel Farke will have 37 years of unpleasant history to sweep away at Wembley next weekend. But if he takes Leeds back to the promised land and wins a third promotion in six years after doing it twice with Norwich, only Neil Warnock (promoted four times with Cardiff, QPR, Sheffield United and Notts County) will be promoted from the Championship more often.”
