Feyenoord regard former Liverpool midfielder Nuri Sahin as a top candidate to replace Arne Slot at Anfield, but they may have to wait until after the Champions League final to seal a potential deal.

Sahin recently held private talks with De Kuip’s bosses over the vacancy and the Turk is understood to have made a real impression on the club’s hierarchy. However, the former Real Madrid midfielder is currently assistant boss at Borussia Dortmund, who he also represented as a player, and does not want talk of his future to disrupt preparations for next month’s Champions League final against Los Blancos.

Turkish giants Besiktas are also eyeing Sahin after recently sacking former Portugal head coach Fernando Santos. The 35-year-old also has nearly two years of managerial experience with Super Lig outfit Antalyaspor, and now a two-way battle for his services is starting to heat up.

Meanwhile, Slot announced on Friday that he has finally signed his Liverpool contract and could also take much of his backroom staff to Merseyside with him following the mass exodus from Anfield.

FC Twente boss Joseph Oosting was a key target of interest for Feyenoord but has since extended his contract with his current club, who are now interviewing alternative candidates.

Sahin only returned to Dortmund in December to back up Edin Terzic, but could be in line for a quick exit from Signal Iduna Park. Slot will take charge of his final game in charge of Feyenoord on Sunday against Excelsior as he prepares to embark on his new adventure in the Premier League.

He told reporters before the emotional show: “I can confirm that I will become a coach there next year. Until now I didn’t think that this would be the preparation for my last match, but it starts now. At the beginning. of the week when you think about training and things like that.

“But the feeling is getting stronger now. That’s why I’m a little late now (for the press conference), because I wanted to say goodbye to some people in person and take time for them, more than shaking hands. I understand that good results help, but it’s really nice to feel that people really think it’s a shame that I’m leaving.”

Liverpool have yet to make any official announcement, although sources at the club have admitted a deal has been finalized with Feyenoord over a compensation package for Slot.
