Former Trump lawyer Giuliani barred in DC over 2020 election claims Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani was disbarred in the U.S. capital on Thursday by an appeals court in Washington, DC, months after he lost his New York law license over claims baseless claims he made about the 2020 presidential election. was stolen.

Giuliani has been a member of the D.C. bar since 1976. His law license was suspended in 2021, and a District of Columbia Bar Ethics Committee recommended in July that his license be revoked. He also lost his New York law license in July.

Giuliani, who in the 1980s served as U.S. attorney in Manhattan, was one of the leading proponents of false claims that former President Donald Trump’s loss to Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 was the result of widespread voter fraud.

He has also been accused of making false statements to courts, lawmakers and the public while he was Trump’s lawyer.

Giuliani was among those charged with Trump in Georgia for efforts to overturn the election results in that state. He pleaded not guilty and called the charges politically motivated.

The former mayor was also charged in Arizona with illegally trying to claim the state’s 2020 electoral votes for Trump.

Giuliani filed for bankruptcy protection after being ordered to pay $148 million in a defamation lawsuit brought by two Georgia election workers who he falsely accused of vote fraud.

However, a US judge ended that bankruptcy last month.
