A popular festival and all things Guyanese

This year’s Guyana Folk Festival will be extra special, timed to coincide with Guyana’s 58th Independence Day on Sunday, May 26. Held at Oasis Academy in Croydon and organized by the UK Guyana Social Development Association (GUSDA), it is a day that encourages everyone (especially Guyanese families and friends) to celebrate the best of heritage, culture, music and entertainment from Guyana.

Prepare your taste buds for a trip down memory lane with a wide variety of traditional foods and drinks such as chili pot, curries and rotis, cooking rice, pine tarts, cassava pone, mauby and ginger ale house, all available for sale.

First held in 2008, past performers have included GUSDA Patron and Guyanese icon Ram John Holder (aka Pork Pie), flutist Keith Waithe, actress Doris Harper-Wills and poet Marc Matthews. The event also featured special performances by US and Guyanese artist Terry Gajraj, Big Red, Jumo Primo (former lead singer of the famous Byron Lee & the Dragonaires) and comedian Liza Singh & Stitchie One Man Band among others. .

GUSDA strives to provide support in the fields of education, culture, sport and health, including mental health and general well-being; our main focus being primarily on children, youth and the elderly.
