Toyota to recall 42,000 vehicles over brake assist system, Mazda to recall 77,000 MX-5 sport utility vehicles

Toyota Motor Corp is recalling more than 42,000 vehicles in the U.S. due to the loss of brake assist that can extend the distance needed to stop, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Friday.

The recall affects certain 2023-2024 Corolla Cross Hybrid vehicles. The agency reported a software error in the electronic control unit that manages the vehicle during skidding that could result in the loss of cornering brake assist.

A loss of brake assist can increase the distance required to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Mazda is recalling 77,670 U.S. sport utility vehicles because of a software bug that can cause front airbags to deploy with excessive force in a crash, NHTSA said Friday.

The recall involves certain MX-5 Miata vehicles from the 2016-2023 model years.

Dealers will update the airbag sensor control module software for free, NHTSA said.

STLAM.MI by Stellantis Fiat on Wednesday recalled just over 15,000 vehicles of its 124 Spider model, which is based on the same platform as the Miata, for the same concern.
