Brazil’s top court rules X must pay pending fines to resume service By Reuters

SAO PAULO/BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil’s Supreme Court said on Friday that social platform X must pay just over $5 million in pending fines to resume service in the country, according to a court document.

Earlier this week, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk told the court that it complied with orders to stop the spread of misinformation and asked it to lift the ban on the platform.

Judge Alexandre de Moraes responded with a ruling that X and his legal representative in Brazil must agree to pay a total of 18.3 million reais ($3.4 million) in pending fines, which have previously ordered by the court.

The judge also asked for a fine of 10 million reais ($1.8 million) for a short period of time last week when X became available again to some users in Brazil.

X has been suspended since late August in Brazil, one of its biggest and most coveted markets, after failing to comply with court orders restricting hate speech and failing to appoint a local legal representative as required Brazilian law.
