British tourists in Germany face ‘preventing’ from having ‘relaxed’ holiday.

British tourists in Germany have been warned after chaos at an airport sparked by protesters and demonstrations. An airport in Germany is closed after climate change activists stick to the runway amid above-zero action.

Six climate change activists broke through a security fence at Munich airport on Saturday and clung to the access route. Activists from the group Last Generation protested against flying as the most polluting form of transport.

As a result, 60 flights were cancelled, airport spokesman Robert Wilhelm told dpa. Fourteen flights due to land in Munich were diverted to other airports, according to police. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wrote on X: “Such criminal actions threaten air traffic and harm climate protection because they only cause misunderstanding and anger.”

German Airports Association CEO Ralph Beisel said: “Violation of the aviation security zone is not a trivial offence. “Over hundreds of thousands of passengers were prevented from a relaxed and punctual start to their Pentecost holiday.”

After several hours, the airport’s two runways were reopened, although a statement on the airport’s official website said there could be further disruptions to the flight schedule. Climate activists blocked flights at Hamburg and Düsseldorf airports for several hours in July.

Volker Wissing, the transport minister, said new laws were needed to increase penalties for such protests, which are currently only classified as minor offences. Climate change protest group Last Generation claimed responsibility in videos on X of its members showing off their orange clothing on the tarmac.

“A total of six people are staying in two groups in different locations of Munich Airport,” said one of the social media posts. “It’s absurd that people can afford flights more than train travel,” said another post on Twitter/X.
