Forget plugs, Royal Caribbean bans another item

Royal Caribbean has gotten aggressive with its list of prohibited items as it seeks to keep its passengers and crew safe.

Many of its prohibited items are expected and obvious, while others may surprise passengers. You cannot, for example, bring marijuana or CBD products on board, even if they are legally prescribed.

That’s because cruise lines follow federal law, at least in this case. Royal Caribbean has also recently added several new items to its list of flammable items that cannot be brought on board.

“Electrical extension cords – including power strips/surge protected strips and multi-socket outlets. We allow the USB charger for consumer power conversion devices (multi-socket blocks on which the outputs are for USB cables),” he said.

This is a change since multi-socket devices were allowed.

The cruise line also has very strict rules when it comes to bringing guns on board, even for people who are allowed to carry them on land.

“We do not allow any guests (including law enforcement officers on vacation) to bring weapons on board our ship. Law enforcement must understand that they will be boarding a foreign-flagged vessel going to foreign countries. All guns should be left at home, locked in a vehicle if driving to port, or turned in to a local office of customs, police, FBI, etc. for safe keeping during travel,” the statement said on its website.

Now Royal Caribbean has banned another item that was allowed.

Royal Caribbean prohibits baby monitors

Technically, you probably shouldn’t leave a bay unattended in a cruise ship cabin. Some parents, however, use baby monitors to keep an eye on older children or to be able to see what’s going on in the room if the child is staying with an older sibling, grandparent, or other caregiver.

Baby monitors, however, are not allowed.

“Baby monitors are not permitted on board our ships because their radio signal could interfere with the ship’s communication and/or navigation systems,” according to Royal Caribbean.

Another popular communication device is allowed.

“Guests are allowed to have two-way radios, more commonly known as walkie-talkies, for personal communications on board. The basic specifications are as follows: coverage range up to 10 miles, power up to 5 watts, internal voice, operated transmission, No external mounting antenna,” he posted.

In reality, though, walkie-talkies don’t work that well on board, and you can text for free through the Royal Caribbean app without an internet plan.

Walkie-talkies are generally considered bad by other passengers because they are noisy and intrusive.

Many passengers are often surprised to find that irons and small appliances (such as coffee makers) are also prohibited.

“All items with open flames or heating elements are strictly prohibited; with the exception of curling irons, straighteners (flat irons) and hair dryers, which are allowed on board,” the cruise line said.
