Japanese stocks fell in early trading after the leadership election

Austria’s far-right Freedom Party scored a historic victory in the country’s parliamentary election on Sunday, the result strengthening pro-Russian and anti-establishment forces in central Europe.

The FPÖ is expected to win just under 29 percent of the ballots cast, according to an official near-final estimate of Sunday night’s vote, strengthening the claim of its leader Herbert Kickl to become Austria’s next chancellor.

It is the first time the FPÖ, which has embraced increasingly hard-line and extremist policies on immigration and the war in Ukraine in recent years under Kickl, has come out on top in national elections.
