Plan to demolish Huddersfield’s final gas tank

A Huddersfield landmark could be demolished this summer after plans were unveiled to demolish the town’s final gas depot.

The 127 ft (39 m) disused structure is on Gasworks Street, off Leeds Road, with the nearby Gas Club venue, which is used by Huddersfield Town fans, also at risk.

The gas support is the last of 47 to be demolished by Northern Gas Networks.

Kirklees Council is expecting a decision on the plans by the end of May.

Gasworks Street’s roundabout is the last to stand in Huddersfield, but the town once had five, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.

Decommissioning of the gas storage vessel, the Gas Club and two additional storage buildings is expected to begin on July 22, with the entire project expected to run until March 10 next year.

A letter sent to residents about the plans said gas keepers had been “a vital part” of the supply system for a century and also strengthened cold weather gas supplies.

“Technological advances and the improved capacity of the modern gas network mean, however, that these gas supports are no longer necessary,” he added.

The application from Northern Gas Networks said there were “no plans to restore or remediate” the site once the work had been completed, but the void below the gas support would be filled to ground level.
