Self-defense is now the most common reason Americans choose to own guns. As of 2023, 72 percent of gun owners owned a firearm primarily for protection, up from just 26 percent in 1999, according to the Pew Research Center. Meanwhile, only 32 percent of gun owners own a firearm for hunting, down from 49 percent a quarter century ago. As the reasons for gun ownership have changed, so have consumer preferences.

Using data from the ATF, 24/7 Wall St. identified the top 25 gun companies in America. We analyzed national production figures for thousands of federally licensed gun manufacturers and ranked them by total handgun production volume. It is important to note that pistols are a classification of handguns that excludes revolvers.

Why it matters

Firearm sales in the US have reached all-time highs during and after the pandemic. Both directly and indirectly, the U.S. gun and ammunition industry generated more than $90 billion in economic output in 2023 and employed more than 384,000 Americans, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, an industry advocacy group. In recent years, changes in consumer preferences and state gun regulations have helped turn handguns into an advantage for gun manufacturers.
