154 stabbing victims in Birmingham already this year – these are the city’s ‘worst’ postcodes

Paramedics have attended 154 stabbings in Birmingham postcodes already this year, exclusive new data can reveal. That’s around ten people every week in the city alone, not including the West Midlands, suffering unimaginable trauma and pain – not to mention the anguish of their loved ones.

Nine of the 154 were “category 1” incidents, where medics encounter victims who require resuscitation and/or immediate intervention in what are described as “time-critical and life-threatening events”. A further 145 knife attacks in the city’s postcodes were ‘category 2’, meaning the victim is in a potentially serious condition that could require immediate help at the scene and rapid transport to hospital.

The statistics come as a Birmingham city center knife victim stabbed near the city’s famous Bull landmark in 2020 spoke of flashbacks, pain and the overwhelming destruction of his life. Punched, kicked and knifed in a gruesome knife ambush outside the Arena, he was left unable to sleep, walk or even sit properly.

Three of those involved in the ‘gang’, despite convictions for affray, possessing a firearm and GBH, avoided jail last month. He previously told us: “I was a good boy, going to college trying to become something of myself. Now everything is gone. I can’t sleep because of my flashbacks and I’m stressed.

“I’m going through hell right now because I can’t even get a job or anything. I’m in so much pain, I’ve been trying to work and I keep getting kicked out because they say “you’re moving too slow.”

Sadly, little has changed in the years since his brutal attack, with the wider West Midlands police area recently revealed as the force with the highest rate of knife crime in England and Wales. The latest statistics, released in a freedom of information request to West Midlands Ambulance Service, detail the number of stabbing calls in 2024 over a 16-week period between January and April 23, when the data was collected.

And the five city postcodes with the highest number of stabbings were also revealed, including Small Heath, Handsworth and Kitt’s Green. The data, as issued by the ambulance service, can be seen below.
