In response to that, and with jokes being made in the Spurs camp about the loss, Postecoglou delivered some harsh truths home, which he later admitted he may have got wrong a few days later. “I’ll try to put it this way, this is probably the worst experience I’ve had as a football manager in a game,” he said.

“Once I realized that I got it wrong in terms of what the atmosphere was going to be like and what people felt, I got a real anxiety in me about what happens if Man City, who are the best team of the world and what would have been. Having the top four teams quite easily, four at Brighton, wherever they’ve played, they’ve scored 15/16 goals in the last four games, if we play as well as we can, but they beat us 5-0.”
