When Leeds Older People’s Forum received some funding from Zurich to support improving the lives of those living in Leeds with dementia, they knew they wanted to do something high profile. So their major event at Headingley Stadium in May, hosted by Radio Leeds’ Andrew Edwards, was just the ticket.

There were over 25 stalls, a community tea bar called “Rose’s Tea Bar” from Headingley, Yorkshire Dance performed, Ascendence dancers performed as did the band Skyfallers, who encouraged a community to sing together.

Alongside this, a unique mural commissioned by the DEEP (Dementia Engagement Empowerment Project) group was unveiled – illustrating how people can continue to live positively whilst living with dementia.

The event was well attended and if you would like to share your experiences of dementia, either as a carer or as someone diagnosed, please contact Chloe at [email protected].

This work will feed into the dementia research centre, whose aim is to improve the lives of all those affected by the disease.

John Hyde, an expert in lived experience, said: “Dementia has affected my sense of purpose, but being included in the research has helped bring it back.”
