Liverpool line up for Wolves as Thiago Alcantara and Darwin Nunez make decisions

Jurgen Klopp will bring the curtain down on his glorious reign as Liverpool manager today when his side take on Wolves at Anfield on the final day of the 2023-24 Premier League season.

While the Reds can’t finish higher than third in the final table, you can bet the players and supporters will do everything in their power to ensure Klopp signs off with one last win. Standing in their way will be a Wolves side who could still sneak into the top half of the table.

So how does the outgoing Liverpool manager approach the game? Do you rotate and try as many members of his team as possible? Or does he go strong with his starting lineup and go all out for the win? Klopp suggested as much. But here’s what our Reds writers think should happen in terms of his squad selection. Well, two of them…

So, for the last time of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool career, how should the Reds line up today? Indeed, the game is not the main event this Sunday, but failure to win would be a disappointing way to end the season, and a win will provide extra buoyancy for the celebrations to come.

The final day of the campaign always throws up one or two, shall we say ‘unusual’ scores, so Liverpool need to maintain their professionalism today for the final 90 minutes. The beaches can wait, for now.

Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson, if fit, all start. I also remember Ibrahima Konate at the back.

Thiago Alcantarais is back in training and it would be great to see him get some minutes at the end, but the midfield is Wataru Endo, Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott. Dominik Szoboszlai can be waiting in the wings.

Up, I’ll give Darwin Nunez the nod for Cody Gakpo. Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz also start.

We finally reach the end of the yellow brick road to Liverpool’s final game of the season. And, as you may have gathered, it is also the last game in charge of a certain Jurgen Norbert Klopp.

The Reds boss will have a few squad posers for the Premier League visit of Wolves, who often seem to struggle as the campaign draws to a close.

And you know what? With Liverpool finishing third and the Midlanders safely in mid-table, it really doesn’t matter.

Yes, Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara are both leaving – and likely a few more before the start of next season – along with a host of backroom staff.

But there is one person who will be celebrated the most and he totally deserves it. The father of the feast that Reds supporters have devoured since he joined the club in October 2015.

It will be exciting. Farewell, then, to the man who made it all happen for the past nine years.

Theo Squires – Darwin Nunez can start in the middle

It’s the end of an era at Anfield as Jurgen Klopp walks off into the sunset. But first, one last game. And for Liverpool, there is absolutely nothing. So let’s let this selection be something to be thankful for.

Andy Robertson is back from injury so he returns to left-back, but Joe Gomez can keep his place by moving into his favored central-back role. The back five won Klopp the Premier League title and lifted all the honors alongside the German. It seems fitting that, although a rare sight in recent years, he should be able to select them together one last time. if he wants. And who knows, maybe today could just be the day the Reds’ longest-serving player finally ends the elusive wait for a first senior goal!

In midfield, in-form Harvey Elliott retains his place with Wataru Endo in the holding role. Curtis Jones can round out the trio in the engine room.

And in attack, with Anfield’s most vocal at the back, Darwin Nunez can start in the middle. He needs a confidence-boosting goal so hopefully he can go full speed ahead in the summer. Mohamed Salah, of course, starts on the right with the in-form Cody Gakpo completing the XI.
