Asia’s Top Military Power Will Shock You

The first phase of the North/Interaction-2024 exercise, a joint live-fire naval drill between Russia and China, took place in mid-September 2024. During the exercise, the two global powers explored potential collaboration and strategic coordination as an option to enhance might and respond to security threats, together. Military analysts are concerned that this potential collaboration could be used to undermine U.S. naval and military power, and to reduce America’s ability to build its own strategic partnerships with allies like South Korea or Japan. To answer this question and identify the Asian countries with the strongest military might, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed the 2024 Military Strength Ranking from Global Firepower, an annually updated defense-related statistics website with information on 145 countries. Global Firepower ranked 145 countries based on their PowerIndex, a composite of over 60 measures in categories such as military might, financials, logistical capability, and geography. The “perfect” score is 0.000. But since this isn’t accessible, consider the lowest scores as the highest markers of power. We also included supplemental information regarding active military personnel, military aircraft, vehicles, and naval capabilities.

According to Paul Bracken, a professor of management and political science within Yale University’s Department of Political Science, Asian military power has been building for decades. Bracken states that modern, technologically adept military power has been missing in action in Asia since the 16th century. But when India began testing nuclear weapons in 1998, it signaled a shift in military might. Fast forward to Russia’s press to take over Ukraine today, and it’s clear that you cannot discount the growth of Asian militaries. Identifying the strongest militaries in Asia provides a better look at how power is shifting throughout the continent, and how that might affect military needs, pressures, or spending in other nations.
