California commissioner orders one-year moratorium for residents affected by Boyles fire

California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has issued a mandatory one-year moratorium on insurance companies to maintain residential insurance coverage for more than 16,000 policyholders affected by the Boyles Fire located in Lake County.

The commissioner’s order protects those living in the fire’s perimeters or adjacent zip codes from not renewing or canceling their insurance for one year from the date of the governor’s emergency declaration, regardless of whether they suffered a loss.

Lara’s ability to issue the moratoriums is the result of a California law he wrote in 2018 as a state senator to provide a temporary exemption from non-renewal and cancellation of insurance to residents who live within or near a declared wildfire. governor.

That order protects more than 16,000 policyholders for a year, effective Sept. 29, for the Boyles fire.
