Sheffield Wednesday star and two favorites Tony Mowbray – Birmingham City free agents can sign now

The retained lists of Championship clubs start filtering in two weeks from the end of the season.

Birmingham City have now launched theirs but more than half of the clubs have not confirmed the senior players who will not be offered new contracts. While the Blues will be in League One next season after relegation, some players on this list will certainly be of interest to the club’s recruitment team.

Tony Mowbray’s 30-year-old Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland signing Bradley Dack has been released by the Black Cats and will certainly be on the Blues’ radar if their manager returns to work. Speaking after signing Dack last summer, Mowbray said: “He won over the Blackburn fans in no time because he was just a genius on the ball, scoring some amazing goals with both feet, headers coming in box, brave as a lion, he fights for every ball.”

Another favorite of Mowbray and assistant Mark Venus, Andre Dozzell has been made available. Queens Park Rangers have opted not to extend Dozzell’s contract following his loan spell from the Blues. It’s worth noting that Sheffield Wednesday have released midfielder George Byers, who has already been linked with a move to the Blues this month.

There are players who have not been officially released but are available through free transfers. Preston North End captain Alan Browne is yet to sign a new contract at Deepdale and is available for purchase from July 1.

Greg Cunningham and Ben Woodburn have been released by Preston. Fans may recall that Woodburn burst onto the scene with a well-taken goal for Liverpool against Leeds United in 2016 when he was just 17 years old.
