Liverpool Women sit 4th in an impressive season – above Man United! – Liverpool F.C

Liverpool Women have exceeded all expectations this season to finish fourth in the Women’s Super League, six points ahead of next best Man United.

Matt Beard’s side only secured promotion to the top flight in 2021/22, and just two seasons after their return they are nestled in fourth place.

Unlike the men’s game, it’s not enough for a European place, but it’s an incredible achievement for the club, their highest finish since they won the title in 2014.

It’s been a remarkable campaign and the Reds finished with a 4-0 win over Leicester on Saturday – which included a brilliant second-half hat-trick from Leanne Kiernan.

Sophie Roman-Haug, the club’s top scorer this season, opened the scoring and sent her side on their way to their 12th and final win of the season.

Optimism for summer

The Reds finished just behind champions Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal, but six points ahead of United – who invested more than Beard’s side.

The return from last season to 2023/24 was 18 points and the Reds have drastically improved their record in front of goal with 36 this season compared to 24 last time.

It’s a testament to Beard and his squad, who will now head into the summer high and optimistic about what 2024/25 can bring.

Next season will see the team play in a new home stadium as they move from Prenton Park to St Helens Stadium, which is a huge step forward for the women’s team.

In fact, it will look like their home stadium with red seats, as opposed to Prenton Park’s blue, in addition to other Liverpool branding.

The summer will see staff changes, with Emma Koivisto, Melissa Lawley, Miri Taylor and Shanice van de Sanden confirmed to be leaving the club.
