Police officer injured after Leeds player involved in car crash at Elland Road ahead of play-off semi-final

A police officer was treated for minor injuries after a car crash involving Leeds player Charlie Cresswell outside Elland Road on the morning of his side’s play-off semi-final clash with Norwich.

Cresswell, 21, was unhurt in the collision near the West Stand entrance gate and is apparently available to play in tonight’s second leg, having been an unused substitute in last week’s reverse fixture.

Emergency services were called to the scene after Cresswell’s Land Rover Defender was involved in a collision with a police car.

Images on social media showed damage to the left side of the police vehicle, with the Land Rover appearing to be relatively unscathed.

A statement from West Yorkshire Police said: “At 10.13am police were called to a collision involving a police car and a Land Rover Defender on Elland Road, Leeds.

“One officer received medical treatment for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported. Investigations are ongoing.”

Leeds are bidding for an immediate return to the Premier League via the play-offs after finishing third in the table behind Leicester and Ipswich. Tonight’s tie starts with a goalless aggregate score after the first leg draw at Norwich.

Cresswell, who progressed through Leeds’ academy, has made seven appearances in all competitions this season, four of them from the bench.
