Hay Festival, when Labor MP withdraws over sponsor’s links to Israel

It comes after hundreds of writers threatened to boycott Britain’s literary festivals this year unless Baillie Gifford, which sponsors them, divests itself of Israel and fossil fuels.

The authors, including Sally Rooney – who turned down an Israeli translation of her novel in 2021 – social activist Naomi Klein, journalist George Monbiot and writer Robert Macfarlane, signed a statement by Fossil Free Books (FFB) calling for Baillie Gifford to withdraw all investments in Israel. .

“Literary organizations can expect escalation, including widening boycotts, increased author walkouts and increased disruption until Baillie Gifford divests,” said an open letter signed by more than 200 writers this week past.

The investment firm was criticized at last year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival by writers including Zadie Smith, Ali Smith and Katherine Rundell, while Greta Thunberg pulled out of her appearance at the festival.

Ms Butler added: “Of course Israel has the right to defend itself, but it has to be within international law.

“I was shocked and disgusted by the events in Gaza. With over 35,000 Palestinians now killed by the IDF – mostly women and children – and Gaza on the brink of man-made famine, I cannot in good conscience attend this festival.

“I repeat my call for an immediate ceasefire on both sides.”
